The Grand Chateau is New Zealand's only hotel located in the Tongariro National Park. The Grand Chateau was completed in 1929, when elegance was much in style. And although it has been extensively refurbished over the years, it still retains many of its most endearing original features.
The Tongariro National Park, one of New Zealand's outstanding conservation areas, came into being as a result of the gift to the Nation from the Tuwharetoa people of the land surrounding and including the three great volcanic mountains - Ruapehu, Ngaruhoe and Tongariro. The original area of 2600ha was subsequently extended by acquisition of surrounding lands to the present size of 75, 000ha to become New Zealand's first National Park, the fourth in the world - recently granted recognition as a World Heritage Area.

Facilities include 2 tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course. Skiing, hiking, petanque and jogging can also be enjoyed. Indoor recreation facilities include heated plunge pool, sauna, gymnasium, games room and cinema.
For the finest authentic New Zealand cuisine, there is the Ruapehu Room, its signature restaurant. The Ngauruhoe Lounge serves coffee / tea, cakes and light refreshments. And the Lounge Bar dispenses a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The new Pihanga Cafe & T Bar offers bistro dining at affordable prices. Whakapapa Tavern & Pizzeria provides great entertainment and games whilst Fergusson's Cafe offers a relaxed Cafe atmosphere.. |
